WLC to partner with post secondary institutions to provide enhanced support for self-employed community members

2021-08-31T21:23:04+00:00

The Government of BC’s expanded adoption of social and First Nations-focused procurement policies means there are new opportunities for W̱SÁNEĆ owned businesses to bid and win government contracts.    However, many community-owned businesses don’t yet qualify to bid on lucrative public sector contracts, and that’s where the WLC’s latest initiative comes in. Collaboratively with the South Island Prosperity Partnership(SIPP), the WLC is working to partner with post-secondary organizations like Camosun College, University of Victoria and Royal Roads. These partnerships would result in the development of accessible micro-credential programs to equip local entrepreneurs with the knowledge and qualifications to [...]

How the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council Came To Be

2021-08-30T22:28:13+00:00

The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council has been over 20 years in the making. Today, with 8 staff and several prominent wins under its belt, we reflect on the story of how the WLC came to be. Shown above, the Gulf Islands. The roots of the WLC began with the formation of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve In 2003, the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve (GINPR) was founded and subsequently, another colonial body began operations in W̱SÁNEĆ territory. A consultation committee (also known as the GINPR Parks Committee) was developed under Parks, which consisted of one Chief and one [...]

The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory will include W̱SÁNEĆ stories and history.

2021-08-18T19:32:34+00:00

The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, located within W̱SÁNEĆ territory and managed by the Federal Government, offers stunning views of both the stars and the surrounding mountains and valleys. Currently, the interpretive signage regarding the night sky and the surrounding land exclusively features a Western perspective. The WLC has been working to partner with the observatory to rectify this erasure of W̱SÁNEĆ culture and language. Recently, the WLC has obtained agreement to move forward on the first of a number of initiatives that would reinstate SENĆOŦEN names and places, both on land and in the sky.  The first initiative is [...]
