W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Forum: W̱SÁNEĆ Coming Together On April 11, 2024, leadership and Elders from the W̱SÁNEĆ communities gathered for a Leadership Forum (the Forum) to view presentations on strategic ways of working together to ensure a bright and prosperous future for the W̱SÁNEĆ community. The theme of the forum was “Planning for the Future of W̱SÁNEĆ,” and leadership from four W̱SÁNEĆ bands attended. Youth Continued Revitalization of Reef Net Fishing in Summer 2024 For the fifth year in a row, W̱SÁNEĆ youth participated in the revitalization of reef net fishing (SX̱OLE) – a traditional fishing technology outlawed by the colonial government in the 1900s. Each year since 2020, youth participating in the program have worked under the mentorship of Knowledge Keepers including XEMŦOLTW̱ to revitalize SX̱OLE. This year’s reef net deployment took place on August 14th, 2024. Read More RECENT POSTS How are we doing? Leave Us Your Feedback Here

Noisy Children in Classroom Music to Teachers’ Ears BRENTWOOD, B.C. (CP) A steadily rising noise level was a measure of success for a four-week summer course for Indian children at Tsartlip school, near this community 15 miles north of Victoria.    The sound of voices was music to the ears of the three teachers and six teen-age volunteers working on the program, because the first day the children did not make a sound, one teacher said.    About 50 children participated in the program designed to accustom pre-schoolers, and some school-age children who have been doing poorly, to a classroom, to get [...]

Chief seeks new direction for Tsartlip Don Tom wants his First Nation to move away from ‘managing poverty’ and become more sustainable.    Growing up on the Tsartlip reserve in Brentwood Bay, Don Tom’s first audiences were his big family.  At one Christmas gathering, his father Chris Tom recalled, the youngest Tom boy stood on a chair and gave a particularly dramatic speech.    The years of theater camps, school plays and improv performances that followed might have been unusual for the trades-focused family, but they prepared Tom for his most important public role.    Tom, 31, was elected Chief of the Tsartlip [...]

SX̱OLE is a highly effective fishing technology whereby two anchored canoes suspend a handmade net in between them to catch salmon. SX̱OLE was practiced freely by generations of W̱SÁNEĆ people before the colonial government banned the practice.  According to reef net expert, W̱SÁNEĆ Elder, and UVic Indigenous Education advisor XEMŦOLTW̱ (Nick Claxton), “the reef net did two [...]
