Times Colonist: Jul 6, 2014 SARAH PETRESCU Times Colonist B.C. policies that do not give First Nations burial grounds the same protection as cemeteries are discriminatory and out of date, says Tseycum Chief Vern Jacks.   Jacks and other local aboriginal leaders have been fighting to protect a small island in Ganges Harbour where human remains and burial cairns were found in 2006.    Because the burial site dates from before 1846, it is managed under the Heritage Conservation Act – not the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act, which offers greater protection.    “The laws are racist,” Jacks said.  “We’re tired of [...]

Times Colonist: Jul 1, 1984    Women are discriminated against under the Indian Act, and women should be consulted on ways to end the discrimination, says Rusty Underwood, co-ordinator of the Tsawout Native Women’s Association.    But the Native Indian organizations who are talking to the federal government about ways of amending a law that allows sexual discrimination against Indian women are mainly headed by men, she said.    “Although Native women are voicing their concerns, they continue to have minimal participation in these negotiations.” said Underwood. “It’s time for the women to be heard.”    On the Tsawout reserve in Central Saanich women [...]

Remembering the Legendary Chief Thunderbird/Jean Baptiste Paul (1896-1966)

2024-06-25T23:57:15+00:00

As part of WLC’s mission to promote respect for W̱SÁNEĆ culture, this is the first of a multi-part series honouring W̱SÁNEĆ community leaders. The series begins with the life story of Chief Thunderbird, also known as Jean Baptiste Paul. Whichever path in life he would have chosen, Jean Baptiste Paul, or Chief Thunderbird as he was known in the wrestling arena, was destined to be special. In 1896 at Brentwood on Vancouver Island, he was born the hereditary chief of the Tsartlip Nation—son to Tommy Paul and grandson to Ben Paul, both of whom were also chiefs. With an [...]

W̱SÁNEĆ Participation in Sports Building the Leaders of Tomorrow

2024-06-25T23:56:58+00:00

W̱SÁNEĆ youths’ participation in sports is not only a continuation of a legacy of athletic excellence but also a primer for the leadership skills that will support W̱SÁNEĆ youth throughout life. Sports have always been integral to the W̱SÁNEĆ community. And, despite lack of access compared to youth in settler communities – such as financial barriers, which include things like a lack of transportation or difficulty accessing physical activities due to inadequate infrastructure and equipment – W̱SÁNEĆ athletes have repeatedly excelled. Recently, community members like Blake Swan and Tua Va’a have demonstrated incredible talent in lacrosse and boxing, respectively. [...]
