Charles Elliott

I am a self-taught artist who has taken the long, slow road to gain my knowledge and skills as an artist in the Coast Salish tradition. From childhood, I have done various forms of art such as drawing, painting, wood carving, printmaking, textile designs.

For the last 55 years I have dedicated my life to the revival of the Coast Salish art discipline which was in grave danger of being lost. The Coast Salish art system was the last and least known of the North West coast art disciplines.

I take great pride in saying that I have been influenced by senior native artists such as Bill Reid, Henry and Tony Hunt, Simon Charlie, Cicero August, Willard Joseph, Norval Morrisseau, Elsie Nelson, and Freda Diesong. Their determination and success has been my fuel to drive me to my level of confidence and success.

I continue to tutor young artists individually, through apprenticeship, and in classrooms of all ages.  After my life’s endeavours I am confident and proud to pass on to up and coming generations of Coast Salish youth a very valuable discipline.
