The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council invites all community members to explore the new W̱SÁNEĆ-only online portal. This platform offers exclusive updates, articles, and important information that isn’t shared publicly, including details on the Malahat Highway and other significant issues. The WLC is also developing a comprehensive library of research within the community, aiming to enhance collective knowledge in the future.

New Podcast Alert: The W̱SÁNEĆ SQTO!
The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council (WLC) is expanding its communication efforts. In addition to providing written updates, the WLC has introduced a new podcast format aimed at discussing challenges faced by the community today.
The podcast will cover a range of topics, including issues with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Canadian government, and many more. The goal is to explore subjects that are important to the W̱SÁNEĆ community.

W̱SÁNEĆ Youth Lead the Revival of the Reef Net Tradition
The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council is thrilled to see the next generation reconnecting with their heritage through the Reef Net project. For the past five years, young people have actively participated in this initiative, beginning with assembling the nets and then setting them in the water.
This project goes beyond reviving a traditional fishing method; it’s about fostering connections with ancestral practices, including the spiritual preparation involved. The youth are not only learning the technical aspects of reef net fishing but also embracing its deeper cultural significance.
The return of the reef net fishery, led by the youth, is a vital step in preserving W̱SÁNEĆ traditions for future generations.
Celebrating W̱SÁNEĆ Women
The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council recently hosted a women’s conference, bringing together matriarchs from the community to ensure their voices are included in key planning efforts. The conference emphasized the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of W̱SÁNEĆ women, offering a platform to plan activities and discuss issues that impact the entire community. The conference was a sacred space for the community to gather, share experiences, receive teachings, and celebrate W̱SÁNEĆ women.
