Salary Range: $40,000 – $60,000 (commensurate with experience)

Location: W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council office; hybrid remote with rotating office presence (2 days per week)

The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council (WLC) is rooted in ancient natural laws and beliefs, guiding the W̱SÁNEĆ people in their responsibility to care for the lands, waters, and all life within them. The WLC’s mission is to foster respect for W̱SÁNEĆ culture, language, and self-determination while advancing the recognition of W̱SÁNEĆ Douglas Treaty rights, Aboriginal rights, and title. This commitment extends to promoting sustainable, equitable resource development within W̱SÁNEĆ Territory and supporting traditional environmental stewardship practices.

Position Overview:
The Junior Marine and Land Use Planner will provide essential planning support to the WLC’s planning team, handling administrative duties such as data entry, document control, and event coordination. This role involves supporting community engagement, conducting research, managing financial, and administrative tasks, and other planning-related responsibilities. The position offers growth potential, including on-the-job and formal marine and land use planning training opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate events, including logistics, venue booking, catering, and participant communications.
  • Attend planning meetings; document key discussions, decisions, and action items.
  • Support project management and proposal writing tasks.
  • Conduct research to assist in decision-making related to marine and land use planning.
  • Maintain accurate records, files, and databases for efficient information retrieval.
  • Support community engagement processes, including facilitation, data analysis, and presentation preparation.
  • Provide technical support during virtual community engagement sessions.
  • Research and assist with planning reports, diagrams, and plans.
  • Collaborate in designing educational workshops on marine use issues, either independently or with external experts.
  • Stay informed on relevant policy developments (e.g., UNDRIP, MMIWG, BC Treaty).
  • Identify alignment between W̱SÁNEĆ issues and government-funded marine traffic programs.
  • Assist in drafting briefing notes and meeting materials for WLC leadership and staff.
  • Participate in additional planning, research, and decision-making initiatives as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of Grade 12, with administrative courses and relevant experience or equivalent training and experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in note-taking and using office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools, Google Docs).
  • Familiarity with Zoom, MS Teams, Miro, Google Docs, MS Office, and project management tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Experience in event planning and project coordination is an asset.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and willingness to take on additional responsibilities.
