Peninsula Streams Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of watersheds and natural ecosystems in the Saanich Peninsula and surrounding areas. We work closely with communities, governments, and Indigenous partners to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable land-use practices.

Position Overview

The Eco-Cultural Technician will play a pivotal role in bridging Indigenous knowledge and Western science to support ecological restoration projects, environmental stewardship, and/or education programming at PSS. This position involves working collaboratively with Indigenous partners, communities, and stewardship teams, applying a “two-eyed seeing” approach that respects and integrates Indigenous ways of knowing and Western ecological practices.  

Key Responsibilities

Relationship Building: Support collaborative relationship building between PSS and Indigenous communities, fostering strong, respectful, and collaborative partnerships and capacity sharing.

Two-Eyed Seeing Approach: Integrate Indigenous knowledge and Western ecological practices in the design and implementation of projects and programs.

Project Coordination Support: Assist in development, planning, delivery, and reporting of restoration and conservation initiatives. 

Fieldwork:  Participate in hands-on fieldwork, while receiving training in Streamkeepers methodology, electrofishing and a range of other valuable field skills

Community Engagement Support: Assist in workshops, meetings, and events that engage Indigenous and settler communities in ecological stewardship and/or environmental education.

Cultural Guidance: Provide PSS with insights and guidance on how to work effectively and respectfully with Indigenous communities, ensuring cultural sensitivity in all interactions.

Training and Development: Participate in and contribute to training sessions related to Indigenous histories, ecological restoration techniques, education program development, and community engagement strategies.

Reporting and Documentation: Maintain detailed records of project progress, partnerships, and outcomes, ensuring transparency and accountability in all initiatives.

Qualifications

Indigenous Identity: The position is designated for Indigenous candidates (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).

Knowledge and Experience:

Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and knowledge systems.

Experience working with Indigenous communities in a collaborative and respectful manner.

Background in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field is an asset. Lived experience is an asset. 

Skills:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across diverse groups.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Commitment to Learning: Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training in both Indigenous and Western ecological practices.

Valid Driver’s License: Ability to travel to various sites and communities as required.
